Walking, three days out

Here is a very short clip of Chloe sniffing & walking on the deck. Amazing to me, how well she is doing. She’s still whiny, and I’m not always sure what I should be doing, but I think we are doing ok.

She is happier without her cone, but sadly her fur-brother tries to box and wrestle her without it, so it has to stay on.

Her appetite is still poor, but she’s had a few small meals of canned dog food, and ground beef with plain yogurt.

She won’t let me ice her incision area, and I’m worried about the squishy area turning into a problem because I can tell there is some fluid there. But, it’s not dripping.

  1. Sounds pretty good so far. The whining could be pain or it could be from the pain meds. Balancing the pain meds can be tricky. Here is a blog post on pain in dogs and cats: https://tripawds.com/2015/09/16/animal-amputee-pain/
And seromas (fluid build up) are common and not usually a concern. Here is a post on wound care including seromas: https://tripawds.com/2011/08/14/amputation-wound-care-for-post-surgery-dogs/
If you have any concerns about Chloe be sure and contact your vet.

  2. So glad she is doing well already! Her appetite should come back slowly. I fed my dog meals throughout the day so it wasn’t so much on his stomach.
The fluid is all normal. Rams had a big squishy lump around his stomach area that was fluid and that went away within a few days.
But it’s seems like she’s adjusting pretty well. She is a gorgeous girl!

  3. Wow she looks wonderful! You are a beauty Chloe. I imagine her appetite is affected by all the meds and we too gave smaller but more meals so our boy always had food with the meds.

  4. Looking good sweet Chloe, looking real good!!

The “seroma” doesn’t even look like a full fledged seroma, so no worries there.

Karen gave you some good links.

I noticed Chloe still jad the morphine patch on, that may cause a bit of “high on drugs” whining. Of course, pain can be a cause too. It sounds like she’s on a consistent schedule though. Is she resting more comfortably now?

Hang in there. No worries, you’re doing everything right. Recovery seems to be going fairly well.

Oh, and you might try some stinky food like liverwurst…the stinkier the better!

BTW, Chloe is a very pretty girl!

    Hugs!
